Spring skip to Korcula!

“Awake, thou wintry earth –

Fling off thy sadness!

Fair vernal flowers,

laugh forth Your ancient gladness! ~”

Thomas Blackburn, “An Easter Hymn”

Slowly we are edging out of what has been a for many a very cold and snowy winter and in a couple of weeks we will welcome the official start of Spring. I love Spring; the colourful flowers, the lighter and brighter days, Easter (not just because of the chocolate eggs) but also the new energy of people awakening from the winter slumber.

In Korcula, Spring also sees the arrival of travellers and holiday makers, eager to explore this beautiful island. The temperature in Spring is warm and the sea is heating up nicely for the first swim of the year. There are lots of enjoyable events to look forward to in Spring on the island as well, including:-

Easter

Easter is an extremely popular celebration in Korcula, with all family members returning to the island to rejoice in the occasion. All of the towns and villages on the island will host their own celebrations but the procession of The Brotherhoods around Korcula Old Town on Good Friday is the epitome of all the festivities. The three brotherhoods, paternities of men from the young to the old, connected to three churches, solemnly sing and process around the town, carrying lit candles of all sizes. The spectacle is moving and the magnitude of some of the candles (and the strength of the men carrying them) is phenomenal.

Marco Polo Triathlon

On the 28th April the Marco Polo Challenge returns to Korcula. There can’t be a much more beautiful location to take part in a triathlon. Open to both amateurs and pros, registration closes on the 27th April, with an early bird special price if you register before the 10th April. There is also a team relay option, should you not feel quite fit enough to take on the whole course alone! Would even be tempted to take part myself but would be looking for a swimmer!

May 1st – Labour Day

Or worker’s day is a public holiday in Croatia. Traditionally this is also the first day of swimming. It is the time to pack up a picnic and your bathing gear and head over to one of the islets in the Korcula Archipelago for a day of eating, drinking and hopefully swimming (or at least dipping your toes in the sea).

British Airways and Croatian Airlines fly to Dubrovnik and Split throughout the Spring season and by the end of April most of the low cost airlines will have also started flying to these airports. Visit Croatia has a helpful Flight Timetable for 2012.

Holiday accommodation on Korcula is also cheaper during the Spring months compared to July or August, sometimes even as much as half the price. April, May or June are the ideal months to rent wonderful private accommodation and enjoy the peaceful scenery without spending too much money. From around €40.00 per night in April and May and €50.00 per night in June we have spacious studio apartments for 2 people with a wonderful sea-view terrace available to rent or from €75.00 – €90.00 per night apartments sleeping 4 to 6 people. You can see a full list of our accommodation options on the Korcula Explorer website.

So to E Marshall’s “Spring Thought”, “out with the cold, in with the woo” be sure to enjoy this glorious season in Korcula.
